Section Two - Wave Bridge to Maldon Bypass Gates footbridge
(Distance approx. 1 mile, allow 30-40 mins)

Description for Section Two and Section Three
These sections are along narrow paths which can be uneven (and muddy in places if the weather has been wet!).
*Please note these sections of the walk wouldn't be suitable for small children.

Did you know…

During construction of new workshops, on the south bank of the Navigation, the original capped quay headings of Dundee stone were uncovered. These must have been buried for the best part of a hundred years!

You can see these a few metres after Wave Bridge on the left hand side of the canal.

The canal towpath after Wave Bridge passes along side industrial units with noisy generators! Move quickly to leave these behind and a peaceful walk can be enjoyed once more!

Pass under the next bridge, which is Black Bridge and continue along the path keeping as close to the canal as you can.

Continue along the path keeping as close to the canal as you can.

Keep following the path, you will pass Tesco's store across the canal on your left.

Carry on along the path you will go under a blue metal footbridge and pass a sign for Oak Tree Meadow.

Continue along the path to the silver metal footbridge (“Maldon Bypass Gates”).

Cross the canal here.

You have finished Section Two!
You can return to Heybridge Basin by retracing your steps, but another option is to follow the sea wall route! There is a small section along the main road but the walk is mostly on the sea wall footpath.

There is a final section, but please note this will add a further mile!
If you wish to continue with the walk go to Section Three!

Sea wall footpath route to Heybridge Basin
(Distance approx. 2.5 miles, allow 11/4 -11/2 hours)

After you have crossed the canal, turn left.
Follow the path under the Maldon by-pass bridge, and walk until you see the blue metal footbridge.

Approx. 10 metres before the bridge take the path on your right. Follow the boardwalk around to the left and go up a steep slope.

When you get to the river turn left, and follow the sea wall footpath.

You will pass Tesco's store on your left.

Follow the path past the Royal Mail sorting office, cross the road, taking the main footpath between the new houses (nos 1-4 and 5-8 Bridge Court), on to the main road.

Cross the road at the zebra crossing, and then turn left. Keep on the pavement, crossing at Station Road, and passing a roundabout until you get to Bates Road.

Turn right in to Bates Road, after approx. 250 metres you will see a slip road on your left (opposite the PSL Group building).

Turn left here, turn right at the footpath sign and follow the path.

Continue along the path until you see Heybridge Creek ahead of you.

At the end of the path you will find a waymarker post.

Turn left and walk towards the new houses. When you get to the road turn right, and keep on the sea wall path until you get to Heybridge Basin.

Section Three - Maldon Bypass Gates footbridge to Beeleigh Falls
(Distance approx. 1 mile, allow 30-40 mins)

After you have crossed the canal, turn right and continue along the path until you get to the next bridge (this is Chapmans Bridge, and is the only one on the canal to be built of yellow bricks!).

Do NOT cross the bridge, continue along the path, with the canal on your right and the golf course on your left.

Did you know…

It took TWO days for a horse and barge to make the journey from Heybridge to Chelmsford!

Follow the path towards the wooden bridge and the Beeleigh Lock Information Board

This area is worth exploring! Here the Chelmer and Blackwater rivers meet, with freshwater above the weir, and tidal salt water below, creating a special wildlife environment. You can get lovely views across the weir and the rivers from the bridges.

You will need to retrace your steps back to the information board.

From the Information Board walk back to the red brick bridge. Turn right on to the road for 12 metres, you will see a path on the right through some bushes. Stop here!

You have finished Section Three!
You can return to Heybridge Basin by retracing your steps, but another option is to follow the sea wall route! There is a small section along the main road but the walk is mostly on the sea wall footpath.

Sea wall footpath route to Heybridge Basin
(Distance approx. 3.5 miles, allow 11/2 - 2 hours)

Take the path through the bushes. Cross the golf tee to the path on the right hand side bordering the golf course. The river will be on your right and the golf course on your left.

Continue along the path, you will get fine views of the river.

Follow the path under the by-pass bridge.

Follow the path beside the river, passing an old stile.

You will pass Tesco's store on your left.
